What you see pictured here is the end result of a two week archery hunt in central Arizona. Specifically, Unit 7E.
After living here for 8 years, I finally put in with friend for the 2008 archery hunt. I had one bonus point, and I think he had two. This was our first choice of hunt , primarily because the odds were decent and my friend had hunted the area in the past.
We started off hunting in the higher country, in the Aspens and pines, and just by dumb luck ended up coming across this bull in the lower juniper/cedar areas. We set up and called without hearing anything (I won't go into a lot of detail here... ) and this bull came barreling in. I was in front and got a 45 yard running broadside shot that hit him in the lungs. He went about 3/4 of a mile and we had an extremely difficult time tracking him in the red lava rock in the area. We didn't find him until quite a few days later - and then only thanks to the ravens. Hence the after-the-fact pictures.
I tried to make him look as big as possible - but I think My bow gives it away =) But my first Elk!! And with a bow!! Cool beans.
Looking forward to going back - keeping my fingers crossed for this year.
